A)2010 Pacific International Recap
It is important that Western Canada supports Judo Canada domestic point competitions in efforts to develop judo and judoka in Western Canada. It is VERY important that Judo in Western Canada grows in strength and we as a region are producing a high quality of athletes that can perform at the national and international level. It is the responsibility of the provinces, judo clubs and coaches in Western Canada to encourage their athletes to compete and to improve. As of today, competitions in Western Canada do not provide enough of competitive depth, to benefit our athletes in terms of their National Ranking and consequently their development.
Pacific International National Team Point Statistics: 5 weight divisionswere awarded 100% national team domestic points; these division had 8 or more athletes per division allowing the medal winners in the competition to score the maximum number of points. 1st Place 15 points 2ndPlace 10 points 3rdPlace 7 points
6 weight divisionswere awarded 80% national team domestic points; these division had 4-7 athletes per division allowing the medal winners in the competition to score a maximum of 80% of the points. 1st Place 12 points 2ndPlace 8 points 3rdPlace 5.6 points
3 weight divisionsdid not have enough athletes to be awarded any national team points; these division had less than 4 athletes per division – athletes who won medals in these weight division score 0 national team points.
If Western Canada is to improve our quality of competitive judo it is important that all weight division have 8 or more athletes participating in domestic point competitions to ensure 100% of national team points. These competitions are a way to help our younger athletes gain national level experience, national team ranking points, World Junior Selection points and points for athletes assistances grants. If we want athletes from Eastern Canada to travel to Western Canada for domestic events it is important to provide events that will give their athletes and opportunity to score full points. It does not matter that there was no Japanese team at the Pacific International this year – our competitions need to be strong based on the Canadian quality and quantity.
I encourage all provinces, judo clubs and coaches to support the2010 Edmonton Internationalwith all your athletes. All U20/U17 athletes who are brown and black belts need to compete in the senior divisions. It is very important for the young athletes to gain experience against stronger opponents.
Note:It is also important to support the training camps following the major Western Canada competitions!
