A) BOOK
REVIEW:
THE PYJAMA
GAME: A journey into Judo
Author:
Mark Law
The first full dramatic
account of the origins and development of judo and behind-the-scenes view of the
modern international tournament circuit.
Approaching his 50th
birthday, Mark Law decides to take up judo and his initial interest becomes an
obsession, then a book. The result is a fascinating journey in which he unravels
this most opaque of sports with humour, verve and style. Part travelogue, part
history, part chronicle of midlife discovery, The Pyjama Game is an illuminating
exposition of an enigmatic and marginal sport. James Corbett, The
Observer

"I came to
suspect that, even in sporting terms, this was an extraordinary world. And I had
landed in the middle of it."- Mark
Law
"Anyone who struggles to
believe that judo builds character might find it easier to accept that judo
certainly reveals it."- Mark Law
"Judo has been
designed not around strength but around technique. A competitor may be strong
but he'll be flattened as soon as he comes up against any opponent who has
superior technique.”- Mark Law

Selection policy
update
With current change in
quota for participation at the Junior World Championships (I.E. 2 per category),
Judo Canada will make the current change to their selection criteria for the
2010 Junior World selection policy:
SELECTION
TOURNAMENT
Junior National
championships 2010 (July 2010)
Prior to the 2010 Junior
National Championships, athletes will be ranked according to Judo Canada’s point
system (NT Policy 3). Only for 55kg & 44kg
the best results from the Senior Nationals 2010 will be considered rank no 1.
If the winner of the
Junior National Championships is also ranked first in Judo
Canada’s point system
(NT Policy 3) he/she will be selected for the 2010 Junior World
Championships.
If the winner of the
2010 Junior National Championships is not ranked first in points, then there
will be a one match fight-off that same day between the winner of
the 2010 Junior
National Championships and the athlete ranked first in points. The winner of
this match will secure the selection.
Special
circumstances:
An
athlete who has a D standard or higher, but who does not win the selection could
be added to the team. A request must be sent to the High Performance committee
of Judo Canada within 10 days following the Junior National Championships.
(Funding will be evaluated by the High Performance Committee as per available
budget)
Mandatory
camps:
1) 2010 Senior National
Championships camp (Jonquière, May 17-19, 2010)
2) 2010 Junior National
Championships camp (Lethbridge, July 5-8, 2010)
3) 2010 Senior summer camp (Montreal, July 26-30,

Judo
Alberta’s high performance coach Fatira Merah orgianized a training tour in
France for some of the young athletes from Alberta and Saskatchewan. The judo
competition which the team participated in was a perfect level event for the
Canadian athletes pitting them against some strong French second division
athletes and provincial/regional athletes from around Paris. The Alberta/Saskatchewan team was in France
for 10 days with the athletes training at the French Institue of Judo, the ACBB
Judo Club and at the US Orleans judo club. It was a very educational trip for
all athletes and it was very interesting to observe some of the training
programs of the judo clubs.

the eligibility criteria for the selection on any athletes attempting to
make the 2010 World Junior Championship Team. Last year a number of national
Youth Champions did not have the opportunity to participate at the 2009 World
Championships because they did not attend the training camp following the senior
nationals.
