A)
LTDM: Long Term
Developmental Model
Yearly Training
Plan:
The
yearly training plan will become more important for judo coaches and clubs as
you are implementing the Long Term Developmental Model ideas into your program.
It will be important to develop your yearly plan in July and August to help
guide you through the 2010 / 2011 season. It will be important to develop a plan
each judo classes and if you have an outstanding athlete you should develop a
plan for the athlete that works within your training plan of your club.
Importance of a Yearly Plan:
It is important to have a yearly plan because it can help keep you on
track
during the busy year and at the end of the yearly you can measure
and
review what went well and what needs to be changed. The plan can be
complex or simple > having a plan is better than not having anything
at all.
Most judo coaches in Canada do not coach as a profession so if you spend
some time in the summer working on the yearly plan, monthly
plan, weekly
plans and individual practice plans then during the year it only takes a
little
adaptations and less work when it is busy.
Important Aspects to developing a Yearly Plan:
1)
Goals
Make sure to
outline the goals for yourself as a coach, your club and have a meeting with you
athletes about their individual goals. Knowing this will help you develop a plan
to help everyone improve.
2)
Qualification/training competitions & training
camps
Important know what
competition and training camps that the athletes will need to be at to qualify
for nationals or World Championships. The goals should be to qualify and then be
good at the important competitions.
3)
Major/Peaking
Competitions
These competitions
are the important events in which the athletes and the clubs training should be
tailored around. You want the athletes to be at their best at these
competitions.
4)
Budget
You need to make
the best plan within the financial resources that each athlete and the club has.
It is important that it is realistic and that it supports the athletes and
coaches development.
Note: Athletes that are
showing potential should be attending 3-5 national training camps a year with a
club coach or a provincial coach to help guide them.
5)
Plan for your clubs
/ program reality
You need to work
within the reality of your own judo club. If you only have the capacity to run
your judo program 2 x a week then you need to develop a program to the needs of
the volume and intensity needed in the LTDM.
Example of an U17
athlete that club only runs judo 2 x a week :
2 x a week judo / 2
x a week fitness / 3 x a week strength / 1-2 x week wrestling or
jujitsu
6)
Find
Help
Be humble as a
coach; if you struggle developing weight training or fitness programs then find
a personal trainer that can help develop programs for your athletes. This is the
same with nutrition, sport psychology, etc…
Important: Coaches should do
work/research ahead of time – meet the trainers, nutritionist, sport
psychologist, etc…before the athletes and educate them about judo is and the
needs of your program and athletes.
7)
Be ready to adapt
the plan
It is okay to make
changes in the plan as the year develops!
8)
Plan Rest
Important to talk
to athlete and parents about rest time and how it works within a yearly plan. It
is important to talk to parents so they can then plan their vacation during a
rest time for the club and athletes and not in the middle of a peak training
time.

Science
What if there really was a way
for everybody to easily make weight in judo? No more hassle, no more running
around with trash bags? No more frustration the day of the competition: "am I
going to make it or not"? "When is the official weigh-in opening, so I can
finally eat?!" All this would disappear, wouldn't it be great? There must be a
way to step on the scale without worries.
Just think about yourself for one
moment, that you are a number one racing car. How do the mechanics handle it?
What is the attention they are putting in the tires, the steering wheel, in
every single detail? What kind of fuel are they using? And here is the main
point: the fuel. If it would be just the regular one, do you think it would be
possible to reach the top performances we get to see? Certainly
not.
A way to make weight in judo at
all times is to optimize your nutrition, to follow a balanced way between food
intake and exercise, to get the right fuel and to pay attention to all little
details as if you were that number one racing car.
As a judoka you know, that all
the techniques are based on balance's laws, on preventing the action of the
opponent, the same principles should be applied to the fuel
intake.
TREAT YOUR BODY LIKE AN
OUTSTANDING RACING CAR, GET THE RIGHT FUEL IT DESERVES, IN ORDER TO ALWAYS BE AT
YOUR PEAK PERFORMANCE!
